Bihu- is the national festival of assam. There are three bihus. namely - bohag bihu, kati bihu and magh bihu and among them i like the bohag bihu most . This bihu is called rangali bihu also . Because it is associated with joy and merriment
Bohag bihu begins in mid april on the last day of the month 'chot' ( chaitra). It last for seven days covering the first week of ' bohag' .
Opinions vary regarding the origin of bihu . Some say that is comes from the word ' bishutba'. But originally bihu was a agricy based festival of the local tribe so, the generally accepted view is that it originates from the bodo word ' baishagu' or baikhu'.
Bohag bihu starts with ' goru bihu' bihu'. On that day cows are cleanly bathed and tied with new cords. They are ted with gourds and brimjals and whipped with the leaves of ' dighlati and makhiyali'. From the next day people celebrate it with traditional Niles. Bihuwans' are presented , community prayers are held in the ' namghars and different games are played . People wear new clothes . Young boys and girls perform bihu dance in groups and sing bihu songs and 'bihu hucharis'. Now a days rangali bihu is celebrated publicly in stages. And people in thousands watch bihu programmes till mid night.
Rongali bihu is a festival of joy and merriment. It is a colourful spring fastival where people irrespective of their castes and creeds difference abd that why i like it most .
Bihu is the backbone of assamese oulture. It binds us with a strings of unity. I am proud of it.
